How to cook delicious rice

Cooking Plain Rice

Cooking delicious rice is easy. Follow the instruction here and you too can start to enjoy great tasting rice at home.

Washing Rice

Place the rice in a colander and put it in a bowl of water. Wash the rice by briskly stirring it with your hand. The water will become cloudy. Empty the bowl, and then fill it with fresh water.
Wash the rice 4 to 5 times, until the water runs almost clear. You can cook Ten no Tsubu rice right after washing rice.

Measurement of rice and water:

By cup measurement :
*1 cup of rice with 1+10% cup of water
For example: 5 cups of rice with 5.5 cups of water.
3 cups of rice with 3.3 cups of water, etc.

We have recommended the weighing of water by cup unit.
On one note, cup of rice is flat measured (full and worn) by cup no less or more.

Cooking Rice with a pot

Measure rice and water and put them both into deep, heavy cooking pot. Make sure that the pot isn’t too big: a 18 – 20 cm pot with a tight-fitting lid is about right for this recipe.

Cook over medium heat until the water boils, then reduce the heat. Gently simmer for 20 minutes or until moisture is absorbed. Make sure that the water doesn’t boil over.
Remove the pot from the heat and let sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Don’t remove the cover during this time.

Fluff the rice with a damp wooden paddle. Drape a kitchen towel over the pot and cover with the pot lid until serving.

Cooking rice with a rice cooker

Measure rice and water*, put them both into a rice cooker and switch on the rice cooker.

* Please check the cooking directions on each rice cooker. Usually rice cooker has mark inside the cooker to show right level of water to cups of rice.

When the rice cooker is turned off, let cooked rice stand for 10 minutes before opening the lid. This enables the heat to permeate deep inside the rice, and make it fluffy.

Gently stir cooked rice evenly with a spatula. Do not overdo it, otherwise rice will become sticky.
